After completing the third grade, a Cub Scout graduates with a ceremony into a Webelos den. This is a special den for boys in the fourth or fifth grade (or who are ten years old).  These older Cub Scouts prepare for the transition into Boy Scouts.   The Webelos Scout program is more challenging to the older boy - in fact, he's now called a Webelos Scout and wears a different uniform signifying his new status.  More independence is evidenced as the boys complete most of their activities in the Den setting with the Webelo Scout's advancement being approved by his Webelos den leader rather than his parent.
If the boy is new to scouting the first achievement the Webelo Scout must earn is the Bobcat Badge.

The Scout begins work on the Webelos badge by earning activity pins in up to 20 activity areas that introduce them to a myriad of career possibilities:

As a fifth grader (or at age 10) he may earn Cub Scouting's highest award - The Arrow of Light aol.bmp (105526 bytes).  This is the only badge that can be carried over from the Cub Scout uniform to the Boy Scout Uniform.

The goal of the Webelos Program, aside from giving the boys fun activities and life experiences, is to prepare them to become Boy Scouts.  Boy Scouts is a program for boys 11 and older, or Webelos after obtaining their Arrow of Light.  Oversight for both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts is through the Boy Scouts of America.

Webelos BSA follows a school-year cycle. Boys remain in the Webelos program until they complete fifth grade, reach age 11, or complete their Arrow of Light and are at least age 10-1/2. At that time, they graduate into a Boy Scout Troop.

Leaders & Meetings

In the Webelos Program each Den will consist of about 8-10 Webelos with a minimum of 2 adult leaders.  The meetings will be held weekly with the leaders coordinating the times and locations.

Uniforms, Supplies & Registration Cost

The Webelo uniform is a khaki Boy Scout long or short sleeve shirt (with blue shoulder epaulets (loops) to signify Cub Scouts), plaid neckerchief, slide and Webelos baseball cap.  The Webelos cap is required as the activity pins are worn on the cap.  The green Boy Scout pants and belt are optional.  First year Webelos Scouts (forth grade) have the option to wear the same blue shirt as the Wolf or Bear Cub Scout but second year (fifth grade) Webelos are required to wear the khaki uniform.  For purchase information and costs for the uniform please click here.

Each Den will set up dues, normally less that $2 for each meeting that will offset the cost of supplies for the den meetings.

The registration fee for Webelos is $13 and includes the Webelos Program Book.  An optional one-year subscription to Boys' Life Magazine, the official magazine of Scouting, is available for $9.
